Well, word of mouth is a great way to advertise forums, but sadly, it doesn't work for me. Maybe it will in a while, when people start respecting me. But i'm really saving my forum by not inviting friends...they are so used to chatrooms that they would spam, be n00bish, etc. If I had a friend who wasn't like that, well, that would be nice. But i'll invite them...and then teach them how to act. Then they would probably join ProBoards Support and terrorize the place with spamming, get banned and then get all mad at me because I got them 'in trouble'. Yeah, that's what would happen if I used word of mouth with my friends. But sometimes I ask my sister for ideas and she gives me pretty successful and good ones. And she's 8.

word of mouth was not very effective in my case. I've told my friends, some of them joined, they've told their friends, one or two joined...but they never posted more than an introduction. I know my forums aren't exactly "high quality" but I hoped the themes I picked and the famous "Word of Mouth" would gain me lots of members. I was obviously wrong. On the other hand, when you get members who joined because a friend told them, maybe they joined because they didn't want to upset their friend, and they might not be really interested.
And I must say I really have a problem with members which didn't activate their accounts!

very true xkamelx. I wonder why people join, but then they dont activate their account, perhaps this count be a topic? To be honest it's the nature of the beast with message boards. In my experience, this has always been, even before the activation code was released with v4. However you game me a good idea, and I'll try to make a thread about it in the near future.

This is how Amway and Herbalife operate. You are basically suggesting a pyramid sales pitch of sorts (except legal).
Ofcourse its never as simple as just telling a couple of friends.

Good in theory, yet.. say, for instance, you have a gfx board and your friends have no interest what so ever- what then? I have many friends keen users of the internet but none the least bit interested in message boards

I rarely ever advertise my board anymore. I don't really have to anymore as my members go out and spread the word on their own. It's well known here around Support as whenever there is a Potter thread asking about big HP boards, mine is always mentioned.
The other day, I had someone contact me about my site since they kept hearing about it over and over again and finally wanted to check it out. It's kind of nice that it's spread like that as tons of people know about it and they spread it to more and more people.

I think it is good to advertise your forum like that. Although you can only really tell people who are interested in your topic.

As said before this method doesn't work for me, but if you know people on & offline that you can drop hints to, it can be very useful I've tried telling my friends & family to join but since it's subject based they're not really interested! If it works, people will tell other people & so on. Don't knock it til you try it I say!

Remember, this thread is really for discussion on word of mouth advertising, and if it's the best for of advertisement. All other questions should go in the support board, or the general talk board.

Well when you mean word of mouth. What do you nessisary mean? Do you mean word of mouth online or do you mean word of mouth in the real world.
Now my board may only have 21 members, but I am sure that I got them from word of mouth on other avatar forums, including Avatarfans. And one way I think they stay is because of the number of boards and all of the stuff you could do on it.
But I am thinking now, that my members tells a friend in the real world about the site. I find that having a domain name helps, although I cannot affourd that. So that is why I love proboard's sub domain names. Because it is so easy to remember, all you need to memorzie is the name of the board and the number.
Anyways I might suggest my members to spend the word by word of mouth. I know my members will do though. I mean they are so loyal.

I just tried this form of advertisement, i do not know if it will work. I hope it does, if it doesn't, oh well, it was worth a try. This seems to be a good way to get people to get onto one persons proboard.
