Wow. I've read some good arguments on the pros and cons of a chatbox/shoutbox. I personally use a Chatango box, which is better than the regular cbox I often see(my opinion). I see no harm in a chatbox and have not experienced any negative effects with it. My members use it for idle chatter and since my forum is an RP forum, I think it works out by helping to minimize my clean-up duties on threads that only have a reply or two before they are dead.
Also, my RP forum is unique in its theme since I took old ideas and tried putting a twist to them so that the characters would control, create, and move along the plots for the forum. I use the chatbox to clarify and help them understand that the set-up I have used is so that they can influence it in their own personal way. In short, it helps me aid confused members quickly and efficiently in ways that I think a PM or thread could not.I can also see the opposite perspective and the merits that it has, so I would just leave it to the user's experience and opinion.

I think these are great for roleplay forums and forums similar to roleplays. However, for general chat forums, I don't like them. Chat forums are all about interacting with each other on the boards - that's the point of the forum. Having a chatbox would take away from the main point of the forum. However, with roleplays, having a chatbox is a quick, convenient way to communicate instead of making a thread in the probably single board where you can chat or talk through PM when you want to send out a quick message. Also, I think a CBox is a great representation of the people on a forum for guests to see.

I think that a chat is good for a forum, because you can talk to people as themselves and quicker. I definitely don't think that it takes away activity from a forum...I think it can for some people, but on most of the boards I am on the chat is used for announcements and quick hi, hello, goodbyes when people are on at the same time. Plus if you have a forum that might involve some contemplation on your post...like say if you are trying to think of the PERFECT response in a debate in a forum, or the PERFECT Roleplay reply, it helps to have a quick way to talk to the people in the forum online at the same time as you to clear your thoughts, or even to ask for help in your response.

Chatboxes are a good addition for a forum. One good reason I'd like to point out is that guests will be able to ask questions regarding the site and how things work around the forum. It's also a good place to hold ordinary random everyday life discussions. For roleplay forums, the chatbox would be a perfect place to discuss how they would set things up for any roleplay threads that they plan on doing. It's a faster way of communication among members rather than sending PMs with one another.
However, giving the chatbox too much attention could drive the members' attention away from forum activity. Most often, if members would like to discuss something, they just do it in the chatbox, whereas, they could already post on the boards to begin topic discussions thus maintaining forum activity. There are certain times wherein public chatboxes like these are easily accessible to trolls and spammers, which could lead to any form of flaming wars within the chatbox, stirring up drama.
I honestly think that the chatboxes are better maintained inside private profiles like social networking sites, which include: Myspace, Friendster, Facebook, Multiply, etc.
Chatboxes aren't a major problem at forums and it's presence in the forum will never be a negative addition. It will just depend with the members who would use it properly, and it's also the admin's decision to add these apps or not.

I've had two chatboxes in the forum. One at a time, of course, but if I recall, I had to remove the first because it was outdated. I actually had membbers complaining about it. The only problem I see in chatboxes is that ANYONE can go and SPAM. But its not really a too big problem, becuase the way I see it, not everyone gives a tip to what SPAM says. And because I own a Roleplaying board, members just have their time chatting around it. And its useful to call their attention on anything and such. Its just a useful invention if used correctly. I've recently adhered to the Chatroom, but people don't seem to be interested in it. They actually prefer the Cbox.

I always use a chatbox of some sort on my forums. It's good for quick conversations, and for answering new member's questions. I have rp boards, so I'm not too concerned about the loss of activity, 'cause we mostly just used the chat board for word games anyway. ^_^
I use chatango, 'cause it's free, has the ban ip address function, and since people have to log in, it's easier to ensure that people aren't impersonating one another. And it's easier to delete messages, where as with c-box you had to go all the way to the site. I used to use c-box, but chatango's way better as far as I'm concerned.

I always use a Chat Box in my forums. It is quick and easy, plus, I think that forums without Chat Boxes are kind of hard to communicate in... Even if it is just a general chat site, or a role-play, and if they have a General Chat board, it is still easier to communicate through a Chat Box. If I am just building a forum with my friends, and we don't plan on advertising it, then I probably won't use a C-Box.. But I have seen, that if I don't have a C-Box, I don't get as many members, so I now tend to put C-Boxes on all my sites - excluding the just friend-no-advertising ones... So I think C-Boxes are a great idea on sites, especially role-plays.

On my forum, I decided not to include a chatbox. Since it's a sport-specific board and not an RPG, I have included an Off Topic section, where pretty much anything and everything gets posted about, debated, laughed (and cried!) over, too. It seems to work best for my type of board, since the chatbox isn't there detracting from posting on the forum, and members who aren't on all the time still get to participate. Best of both worlds.

I won't deny that I'm too lazy to read all the posts before this one, but I'm sure most (if not all) state what I'm about to say. Personally, I think chatboxes are essential. I don't mean essential as in, "Oh no, my site will fall apart if I don't have a chatbox!" but they can be a very important part of any site. If it's guest-enabled, it can allow guests an easier way to ask questions, get to know the members, et cetera, which is typically a lot easier than searching through a bunch of threads to find the answer to a question or simply posting in some kind of guest-friendly board; chatboxes are quick and, when used properly, very effective. However, there will always be spammers. I had a "friend" who just loved spamming chatboxes, especially when she was mad at people. Was she mature, you wonder? Not really. And the same is true of a lot of people out there. Of course, the admin or people with access to the chatbox can delete messages and ban spammers, but if they can change their IP, they can just come back and spam more. Another time, the same friend was "arguing" (oh how I love quotations) with a few of her friends about ... stuff I sure as heck didn't want to see, let alone guests? So yeah, even members could spam the chatbox or scare away potential members. I prefer having them, and if problems arise, I disable it for at least a day. If the problems persist (which, for some reason, they don't seem to), I guess you could just disable for an unspecified amount of time, or whatever. I like them being there so I can talk to members more effectively, answer guests' questions, et cetera.

Candy only posted this a few posts before yours Ok? I dont agree with him/her. I thought about my post in like 2 sentances. Besides, there is only two sentances in that quote, so "Candy" cant even listen to his/her own rules. There's a difference between a normal post which is covered by the four sentence rule, and a moderator moderating their board. If you have a dispute with a staff member, please send that staff member a PM, and don't air it out on the boards. Everyone else, let's please keep on topic. The rules clearly state that when you're posting in relevance to a thread, to keep all posts four sentences or more in order to generate discussion on this topic. Thank you. edit;; clarified some points.
